The world’s dream of a hydrogen economy calls for reducing energy consumption and emissions while stimulating economic growth and creating new jobs. The envisioned economy will rely on hydrogen as the commercial fuel if it is produced from domestic energy sources in an economic and environment-friendly manner. The vision also calls for the use of fuel cell technology to lower the dependence on oil and coal and reduce the level of carbon emissions. However, the attainment of this vision involves the overcoming of several challenges. Hydrogen Green Energy and Stock

Hydrogen is a medium to store energy and not a primary source of energy. It has the potential of being used as a fuel in a variety of applications including fuel cell power generation and fuel cell vehicles. 

Some features of this element are:

  • Hydrogen-powered ICEs, fuel cells and fuel cell vehicles emit only water vapor and no harmful gases.

  • It is available in abundant quantity and not a finite limit like petroleum-derived gasoline

These features make hydrogen economy a highly viable option but only if we have the necessary infrastructure to produce, store and supply it. Renewable energy resources such as wind and solar can be used to produce electricity to be used for hydrogen production. We also need to utilize the existing infrastructure such as the gas pipelines and railroads to minimize the cost of producing and transporting hydrogen.

Hydrogen Industry and Challenges

  • Hydrogen production companies are currently producing hydrogen from coal, oil, natural gas, and water electrolysis. But the main issue facing the industry is its storage. Hydrogen, when used as a direct fuel to a vehicle, needs to be stored and for that, it must be pressurized or liquefied to allow an appropriate driving range. Another option is to store hydrogen in underground caves or depleted oil fields.

  • Another challenge faced by the industry is that for use as part of a fuel cell, hydrogen must be ultrapure.

  • Inadequacy of the infrastructure required to develop hydrogen and its transportation without any kind of loss. Hydrogen filling stations need to get hydrogen via delivery trucks and trailers or find ways to manufacture it onsite. GenH2 has developed modular stations that allow on-site manufacturing of hydrogen in an environmentally friendly manner.

  • The production of hydrogen from fossil fuel reformation raises significant environmental concerns. Our company has developed special technology called hyrolysis to manufacture hydrogen without any kind of environmental issues.

  • The price of hydrogen delivered to the customers depends on the size of hydrogen plants, distance to the load centers and the inputs used to manufacture hydrogen.

Role of Hydrogen Infrastructure Companies

GenH2 boasts of an experienced team that has previously worked for NASA, DOD and DOE and is working on developing solutions that contribute to the creation of the much-needed hydrogen infrastructure.
